Thank you to Mary Oxenham (Aunty Glo) QSM and Porirua’s local Solomon Aelan community for showcasing their delicate taonga. Items include Nguzu Nguzu carvings from the Western Solomon Islands used during the head hunting times, fans, baskets and bags made from pandanas palm leaves and shell money jewellery originating from Malaita.

Chat with Solomon Aelan artist Selwyn Palmer Teho as he creates a stunning new artwork featuring traditional Solomon Island designs.
Selwyn is a descendent of the Sa’a Iho Clan, from Tongomainge Village on Mu’ugiki Bellona atoll, in the Renbel Province of the Solomon Islands. His mother Lina Ngatonga and grandmother, Alice Tepuke are weavers and his father Fenry Teho along with Uncle Frank Haikiu, a well-known carver, encouraged Selwyn in to the arts. A participant at the Melanesian Arts Festival and 11th Pacific Arts Festival in Honiara in 2012, Selwyn has since lived and worked as a multimedia artist on the Kapiti Coast for the past 7 years. Selwyn is a painter, muralist, sculptor, and Tattooist.
