Outside Inside

The works in Outside Inside are derived from photographs taken as part of the artist’s visual diary throughout 2020. Marilyn reinterprets and abstracts forms using textiles as a medium to construct multiple fabric snapshots. These skilfully created works inspired by landscapes, streetscapes, gallery visits and domestic surroundings are created with colourful fabric collected over many years, including some from friends, and others from her mother’s textile collection.

Sometimes the colours relate to the actual objects, and other times are completely different. For example, ‘Clouds at Kuku’ portray undulating cloud and sky formations. The blue evokes an intensely sunny day, kite-flying on the beach. In contrast, ‘Cube Sculpture’, depicts hard-edged forms in an urban patch of green grass. Marilyn’s smaller sketches zoom in on magnified abstractions of other vignettes, or snapshots of her daily life. She also draws inspiration from modernist influences – from ‘drawing in space’ and collage techniques, to the contemplation of 1960s minimal abstraction.

BIOGRAPHY

Marilyn completed her Bachelor of Fine Art degree with honours at Whiti o Rehua College of Creative Arts at Massey University Wellington. She has been a finalist in several award shows, including the National Contemporary Art Award 2019, Parkin Drawing Prize 2017 and 2018, and the Wallace Art Award 2018. Marilyn is also a member of artist collectives Te Waituhi ā Nuku : Drawing Ecologies, and The See Here.
