Creative New Zealand Toi Aotearoa and Pātaka Art + Museum are thrilled to announce a new three-month Aniva Arts Residency for a Pasifika artist or practitioner who identifies as LGBTQiA+, or MVPFAFF in Pasifika communities.
The residency is a new opportunity developed under the Pacific Arts Strategy 2018 – 2023 that embraces the rich diversity and innovation in the Pacific arts community.
Applications are now open for the inaugural Creative New Zealand Pasifika LGBTQiA+ residency and will close on Sunday 13 June 2021.
The successful candidate will be based at Pātaka in Porirua, Wellington from August to October 2021.
“We’re very excited to see this opportunity come to fruition to support our Pasifika artists from our LGBTQiA+ community. Our Pacific Arts Strategy enables us to support bold and dynamic Pacific arts, in all its diversity and vibrancy, and to make space for these voices to be heard,” says Arts Council Chair Caren Rangi.
“This residency is the result of our communities telling us that we needed to create a Pacific arts environment they wish to see. We’re very grateful to our LGBTQiA+ whānau who guided us with their insight, and in turn, we hope this is the start of some amazing kaupapa Pasifika that Toi Aotearoa will look to continue to grow and evolve.”
Creative New Zealand’s Pacific Arts Strategy aims to strengthen dialogue through creativity of lived experience, realities and issues confronting the Pasifika Arts LGBTQiA+/MVPFAFF communities in Aotearoa.
“Creative New Zealand wish to thank the many Pasifika artists from our LGBTQiA+ community who have supported this new initiative. We also want to acknowledge Phylesha Brown-Acton MNZM who has been a consultant expert as we activate and make space for everyone, as well as innovate and share knowledge and resources with our strategic partnerships,” says Creative New Zealand Senior Manager Pacific Arts Makerita Urale.
Applications will be considered from artists working in any art form or genre, with priority given to contemporary practice in the visual arts, craft/object, multi-disciplinary arts, inter-arts and performing arts.
The successful applicant will receive a fee of $6,000 per month for three months, $1,000 towards domestic travel, $3,000 towards accommodation costs (if required) and a $2,000 project budget.

“Residencies offer vital, funded opportunities to imagine and develop projects.”
The artist is expected to create a project that can be presented at Pātaka Art + Museum by 31 March 2022.
