Tesserae Tales of Aotearoa

Rowena Rooney, Michelle Arnold nee Black and Rachel Silver

9 DEC 2022 – 29 JAN 2023

Tesserae Tales of Aotearoa is an exhibition showcasing the artwork of three women mosaic artists based in the North Island.

Their collection in Tesserae (a small block of stone, tile, glass or other material used in the construction of a mosaic) reveals a snippet into the world of a mosaic artist, focusing on intricate detailed designs with a combined career spanning over 30 years.

Mosaic is an ancient art form not typically seen in Aotearoa. Like any art form, mosaic can be just as diverse in its delivery, style, content and technique. This collaboration gives the opportunity to present, through different cultural lenses and influences, mosaic art with a contemporary edge.

Rowena Rooney of Blue Turtle Design is of Fijian descent and lives in Auckland, Michelle Arnold (nee Black) of Holey Mosaics is Māori and based in Te Puke Bay of Plenty and Rachel Silver of Silver Mosaics is Pakeha and based in Wellington.

They will be exhibiting a variety of wall art, 3D pieces and ceramic mosaic jewellery for the cash and carry section
