This is the first year that Aotearoa will celebrate Papua Niugini Tok Pisin Wik - Papua New Guinea Pidgin Language Week. Join us for a series of events to celebrate this year’s theme ‘Lukautim, strongim na kirapim tokples na pasin blo tubuna - Preserve, revitalise and promote our language and culture.’
A highlight for the week will be a display, featuring a collection of artefacts from the Maladina family, that include Sepik masks, ancestor and spirit figures, alongside Oro barkcloth, courtesy of the Wellington Melanesian Women’s Wantok Group. Contemporary artworks from Jennifer Sim and Omphalus Kua will be a highlight! Tankyu tru, with a special thanks to Navili Maladina and Ancey Wamiri for organizing.
Papua Niugini Tok Pisin Wik flag raising ceremony at the Peace Memorial, Te Rauparaha Park followed by refreshments at Pātaka. Pātaka will hold the ceremony if it’s raining.
Tok Pisin Language Classes for beginners. Available to anyone! Whether a beginner or just curious about tok pisin and PNG history, come sit and learn as we dive into the vibrant culture of Papua New Guinea. No registrations necessary.
Live music and a traditional performance by the Asaro Mudmen. The Batsy's from the Wellington PNG Community will perform their string band medley, singing songs and celebrating the rich musical sounds from various parts of Papua New Guinea. Adding to this, the Asaro Mudmen from the area of Goroka (Eastern Highlands) will make a special appearance, unique only to this area within Papua New Guinea.
