A common thread had already woven these artists together; they have all graduated from visual arts programmes at Whitireia since 1992, including their most recent degree course, called Toi Poutama, producing its’ first weaving and carving graduates in 2016 & 2017.
Work by established artists in the show, such as Tracey Morgan, James Molnar and Matthew McIntyre-Wilsoncontinue to inspire others with their art practice; also working within the Porirua community as art teachers in schools, at wānanga (Te Wānanga o Aotearoa) and at Whitireia NZ, they now join with the weaving and carving graduates as a continuation of their mentorship and support to these up-coming artists.
Watch the artists in the exhibition weave a large woven mat (whariki) made of flax.
