Week one: 25 September – 1 October

All week: Korowai aroha o Pātaka self-guided activity

Draw a special Pātaka memory on a feather and add it to the cloak of Pātaka. All ages


Haiku writing drop-in workshop | Monday 25 Sept:10.30am – 12.30pm

Celebrate our treasured Japanese garden by having a go at writing a haiku poem about Pātaka. Local writer and poet Lynn Davidson will show you how.
Ages 8+


Cake cutting with Friends | Monday 25 Sept:1pm

The Friends of Pātaka have cake to share and you’re all invited! Celebrate with Mayor Anita Baker and the Pātaka whanau as we kick off our 25th Anniversary celebrations.


A watercolour Feast | Tuesday 26 Sept and Thursday 28 Sept: 1pm – 2.30pm

Inspired by Naadohbii’s window artwork Feast of Light and Shadows, create a watercolour artwork using watercolour and crayon.


Friday 29 Sept and Saturday 30 September: 10.30am – 12pm

Storymaking character creations

Inspired by Naadohbii’s window artwork Feast of Light and Shadows, bring one of the creatures to life or create your own! Where does it live? Does it have a superpower? What does it sound like when it laughs? It’s up to you! Ages 8+


Sunday 01 Oct: 10.30am – 12pm

Te Awarua-o-Pataka puppet making

Bring our big fishy friends to life! Make a puppet of some of our popular characters from Te Awarua-o-Porirua room here at Pataka and put on a show in the puppet theatre. Ages 5+.

Week two: 2 – 8 October

All week self-guided activities:

Haiku writing activity

Have a go writing your own haiku poem about Pātaka. Pop it into the special haiku box to enter it into the haiku writing competition! Winners selected Saturday 28 Oct. 8yrs+


Monday 02 Oct 10.30am – 12pm

Origami waka activity

A nod to our beloved Japanese garden and sister city Nishio Japan. Make and decorate your own paper origami waka. Ages 5+


Tuesday 3 Oct and Wednesday 4 Oct: 10.30am and 2pm

Cyanotype workshops

Let Pataka Senior Education Officer Josie Whelan show you how to create photographic prints using light-sensitive paper. Ages 5+. Free. Limited spaces.
