Maioha Kara: In Good Relation

2 MARCH – 2 JUNE 2024

Te Whanganui-a-Tara artist Maioha Kara creates timber sculptures, excavated with patterns and filled with glitter. In Good Relation is her first solo exhibition in a public gallery.

Drawing on concepts and geometries found within Te Ao Māori, Maioha Kara explores the connections between people and our natural environments. A focus on cycles found within both patterns and nature underpin Kara’s wider holistic interest in the interconnection between all things, stretching out to the very beginnings of creation.

In Good Relation features a selection of new and existing works that traces Kara’s experimental approach to form, colour, material and pattern. The exhibition highlights her ongoing interest in the relations between, and mauri of, all things.

Maioha Kara (Ngāti Korokī Kahukura, Ngāti Tipa, Te Ātihaunui-A-Papārangi, Tūhourangi, Te Whānau a Hinetapora, Kuki Airani) is a Wellington-based artist currently completing her PhD at Massey University. Her work has been shown at Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and The Dowse Art Museum and is held within public and private collections across Aotearoa.
