Poi Poi Poi

Poi Poi Poi Works by Gabrielle Belz, Diane Prince and Shona Rapira Davies

19 June - 20 July 2014 in the Bottle Creek Gallery

Poi Poi Poi brings together the work of three prominent Māori artists, and is part of the Matariki season of celebrations at Pataka.

Gabrielle Belz has painted all her life and has been making prints for more than 30 years, usually with low tech methods. She acknowledges the arts of Whakairo, and Raranga in her work, using chisels combined with her painting skills to enrich it. She has completed residencies and commissions all over New Zealand including a 30 metre mural in Otara.

Diane Prince is a multimedia artist: painter, weaver, installation art practitioner and an award-winning theatre set designer. She has been exhibiting nationally and internationally over the last fifteen years. Her work is a visual expression of her strong stand on Māori rights and Māori womens' issues.

Shona Rapira Davies is a sculptor and painter. She is well known for her landscape sculpture commission for Te Aro Park (also called Pigeon Park) in central Wellington. She exhibits widely; both as a sculptor and as a painter. Rapira Davies is interested in the empowerment of Māori women in spite of perceived racism (in a Pākehā culture) and sexism (within the patriarchal structure of Māori tribal organisation).
